Wistman's Wood is a rare 3.5-hectare high-altitude oakwood on Dartmoor, split into three groves of stunted, 400-500-year-old oaks growing among granite boulders. Managed as a National Nature Reserve, it is one of England's few surviving upland temperate rainforest fragments.

Soil: thin, wet, acidic peaty soils over granite clitter at 380-410m elevation

Dominant species: dwarf pedunculate oak
