Sherwood Forest NNR covers 425 hectares of the remnant royal forest famous for its Robin Hood legend and the Major Oak. Jointly managed by the RSPB, Nottinghamshire County Council and Forestry England, it holds one of Europe's densest concentrations of ancient oaks.

Soil: sandy Sherwood Sandstone soils, acidic, free-draining

Dominant species: oak, including over 1,000 ancient oaks more than 500 years old

Parking: Pay-and-display car park at the Sherwood Forest visitor centre
