Never eat anything you cannot identify with 100% certainty.

This is a guide, not a substitute for expert identification. Foraging guides - including this one - can contain errors. If you are not completely certain of an identification, do not eat it. Cross-check against at least two independent sources, and when in doubt, consult a local foraging expert or an experienced forager in person before eating anything wild.

Old Winchester Hill is a 66-hectare chalk downland National Nature Reserve topped by an Iron Age hillfort and Bronze Age barrows, crossed by the South Downs Way. Managed by Natural England, its unimproved grassland is fringed by hawthorn and blackthorn scrub and hedgerow-type cover good for autumn berries.

Soil: thin chalk soils on the South Downs, alkaline, free-draining

Dominant species: hawthorn and blackthorn scrub with occasional yew

Parking: Small free car park at the reserve entrance off Beacon Hill Lane
