Never eat anything you cannot identify with 100% certainty.

This is a guide, not a substitute for expert identification. Foraging guides - including this one - can contain errors. If you are not completely certain of an identification, do not eat it. Cross-check against at least two independent sources, and when in doubt, consult a local foraging expert or an experienced forager in person before eating anything wild.

A 320-hectare heath in north London, long managed as common land, mixing open grassland, ancient heath and areas of secondary woodland including the SSSI-designated Ken Wood and West Wood. Its ponds and varied terrain make it a popular but heavily used site, so pressure on plants near the busiest paths is higher.

Soil: London Clay capped with Bagshot sand on the higher ground, acidic

Dominant species: oak, birch, mixed secondary woodland around Ken Wood and West Heath

Parking: Limited on-street parking around the heath; no dedicated large car park
