Never eat anything you cannot identify with 100% certainty.

This is a guide, not a substitute for expert identification. Foraging guides - including this one - can contain errors. If you are not completely certain of an identification, do not eat it. Cross-check against at least two independent sources, and when in doubt, consult a local foraging expert or an experienced forager in person before eating anything wild.

Established in 1947, Galloway Forest Park covers 774 sq km of southwest Scotland and was the UK's first Dark Sky Park, designated in 2009. Forestry and Land Scotland manages it primarily for Sitka spruce timber production, with over 800,000 visitors a year using its hillwalking and cycling trails.

Soil: acidic upland forest soils

Dominant species: Sitka spruce plantation

Parking: Multiple Forestry and Land Scotland car parks throughout the park
