Never eat anything you cannot identify with 100% certainty.

This is a guide, not a substitute for expert identification. Foraging guides - including this one - can contain errors. If you are not completely certain of an identification, do not eat it. Cross-check against at least two independent sources, and when in doubt, consult a local foraging expert or an experienced forager in person before eating anything wild.

Farthing Downs, in Coulsdon on the London/Surrey border, is the most significant remaining area of semi-natural downland in Greater London, managed by the Corporation of London (also custodian of Epping Forest and Hampstead Heath). Grazing keeps the chalk grassland open, with old hedgerow boundaries and scrub lining the site.

Soil: thin chalk soils over the North Downs, alkaline

Dominant species: hawthorn and blackthorn hedgerow scrub with pockets of ancient woodland

Parking: Small free car park off Ditches Lane
