Never eat anything you cannot identify with 100% certainty.

This is a guide, not a substitute for expert identification. Foraging guides - including this one - can contain errors. If you are not completely certain of an identification, do not eat it. Cross-check against at least two independent sources, and when in doubt, consult a local foraging expert or an experienced forager in person before eating anything wild.

Clifton Down, part of the wider Downs area of Bristol, is 400 acres of public open grassland managed jointly by Bristol City Council and the Society of Merchant Venturers. It sits over an Iron Age hillfort, with scrub margins rather than closed woodland.

Soil: thin limestone soils over Carboniferous limestone, alkaline

Dominant species: scattered hawthorn and blackthorn scrub, limited closed woodland

Parking: On-street and Downs car parks nearby
