Never eat anything you cannot identify with 100% certainty.

This is a guide, not a substitute for expert identification. Foraging guides - including this one - can contain errors. If you are not completely certain of an identification, do not eat it. Cross-check against at least two independent sources, and when in doubt, consult a local foraging expert or an experienced forager in person before eating anything wild.

Aston Rowant NNR covers 159 hectares of the Chiltern Hills' northwestern escarpment, a Grade 1 Nature Conservation Review site known for chalk grassland orchids and juniper scrub. Natural England manages the reserve with grazing, and its hazel-rich scrub margins support the endangered hazel dormouse.

Soil: thin chalk soils over the Chiltern Hills escarpment, alkaline

Dominant species: juniper and hawthorn scrub with hazel and beech at the woodland fringe

Parking: Small car park off the B4009 near Aston Rowant village
