Afan Forest Park spans 48 square miles of the South Wales valleys, threaded with disused mineral railway lines converted to walking and cycling trails. Managed by Natural Resources Wales, its mixed plantation woodland is internationally known among mountain bikers as well as walkers.

Soil: reclaimed upland valley soils, generally acidic

Dominant species: larch historically, now being diversified with mixed species due to disease
